Windows 7 Software Compatibility Testing - CloneDVD

Posted in DVD & Video, Reviews  by Lucas Artigas

While the time of the VHS is almost over, the DVD has become the universal media format for watching movies. If you are afraid of loosing or damaging your DVD collection, there is a program like CloneDVD which is one of the easiest ways to make copies of original DVDs, provided that they are not CSS protected. CloneDVD is able to carry out all the steps required to copy a DVD, especially when it is necessary to reduce the size to fit a single layer DVD and it performs such actions definitely well, without unnecessary complications. If we take a look at the interface, we can see that it is extremely easy to learn without technical options to worry about, all this thanks to its very well designed wizard. CloneDVD is full of options that help us to reduce the file size without compromising the image quality. For example, you can choose to omit some DVD bonus like foreign subtitles, trailers etc… Copy speed is more than respectable, allowing the copy in the form of ISO file to your hard drive or a recordable DVD in a few moments. Today I'm going to tell you how this handy application behaves under the Windows 7 environment.

Note: CloneDVD does not allow us to clone DVDs which are protected by CSS or other copy protection mechanisms, nevertheless, CloneDVD can be used with tools such as AnyDVD in order to overcome these protections. Anyway it is advisable to burn backup DVDs only from legally owned DVDS and only for its personal use.

Installation and First Run
Clone DVD performs a really quick and simple 3-step setup process, first of all I had to accept the license agreement, then choose the installation options, and finally the installation location.

After that Clone DVD showed a progress window and a few seconds later it was ready to run.

As I said, CloneDVD made a really clean and straight forward installation, and getting it to run for the first time took no longer than a couple of minutes. Most surprisingly, it took only 9MB of my HDD and when running it used very little system resources (around 2MB of RAM).

Functionality and Integration
You know, CloneDVD has a very simple way of working, there are three option: the first, "Copy DVD Titles" enables us to copy one or several DVDs including its original menu or not. So in order to test it I used an original DVD. CloneDVD worked perfectly, showing previews and all the available data in order to make a nice selection of what to copy or not.

Having made all selections and adjustments regarding size and quality of the outcome, audio and subtitles, and temporary directory, the copy process was launched.

I got the same successful results when launching the second option: "Clone DVD" which was quicker and easier as there were no decisions to be made, just a few clicks and the cloning started.

And finally, the "Write Existing Data" worked also well, I just selected the file source and format and CloneDVD burned it quickly and easy.

Regarding integration, Clone DVD worked perfectly under the Windows 7 environment including Aero features.

Bugs Report
As you can imagine I'm going to leave this section empty, not only because the result of my testing were totally satisfactory but also because I could not find a single record of hitches, troubles, delays, or inconveniences, not in the web, Windows 7 dedicated forums or even in SlySoft forums.

Final Words
So, what we have here is a simple, fast, and full of options piece of shareware which can help us very much when it comes to DVD management and backup. I could also find many users recommending it as a good DVD cloning solution for Windows 7.

Have you tried CloneDVD? Let us know what you think about it. Please, leave your comments below.
