Microsoft Authorizes Nonprofits to Use Free Licenses

Posted in News  by Eric

Microsoft expanded on its project to avoid anti-dissent piracy crackdowns by expanding its coverage to 12 more countries. In addition to Russia, the pledge is now extending to China, Malaysia, Vietnam and eight former Soviet states.

The plicy will provide free licensed software technologies from its workshopas free software licenses to more than 500,000 advocacy groups, independent media outlets and other nonprofit organizationsbefore so that piracy can’t be used as a pretext to stamp out political opposition.

Ater the New York Times reported last month that private lawyers employed by the company had usually supported law enforcement officials in Russia in crackdowns on outspoken advocacy groups and opposition newspapers, Microsoft made decision to extend its antipiracy policy.

Once installed, these licensed technologies will give no right to the governmental authorities to investigate these groups on account of limiting piracy activities.

“We clearly have a very strong interest in ensuring that any antipiracy activities are being done for the purpose of reducing illegal piracy, and not for other purposes,” said Nancy J. Anderson, a deputy general counsel and vice president at Microsoft. “Under the terms of our new nongovernmental organization software license, we will definitely not have any claims and not pursue any claims against nongovernmental organizations.”

The effort won’t take immediate effect, Nancy noted that the efforts still have to accommodate the law and receive local translations.

Apple to Launch a New Computer Operating Software

Posted in News  by Eric

Apple Inc. will release a new version of its computer operating software on october 20th. It could help the consumer-electronics giant expand into corporate market.

The company will hold an event named “Back to the Mac,” a reference to its line of laptop and desktop computers. The event will introduce the new features in the software that powers Macs and possibly new computer models.

The event corresponds with Apple’s rapid transformation. The company, which was once famous for computers popular with students and graphic designers, transfered into a mobile-device giant as its iPod, iPhone and iPad products took off with consumers. Now, those devices are proving popular with business executives, driving Apple to aggressively move into the corporate market.

However, Apple faces challenges of getting Macs into offices. The company’s desktop and laptop computers priced very high. Therefore, many companies are reluctant to buy the products. Besides, the Mac operating system hasn’t historically satisfied the needs of corporate customers, even though the company quickly added business-friendly technologies to its mobile devices. Opera Appeals for Cross-Browser Extensions Standard

Posted in Internet, News  by Eric

The Oslo, Norway based company said that it's time to consider implementing cross-platform extensions standard through which the wed will be advanced.

The coming Opera 11 will feature extensions for the first time, which will be similar to those found in other browsers, and the company says that one of its goals is to make it easy to port them from "certain browsers." Developers will be able to create Opera extensions using open standards—HTML5 for page contents, CSS for formatting, JavaScript for processing–as extensions in Google's Chrome, Apple's Safari 5, and Mozilla Firefox's upcoming Jetpack. The first iteration of Opera 11 will support injectable Java, callouts, some UI items, and a basic tabs and windows API..

Facebook: Is the New Safe System Really Safe?

Posted in Internet, News  by Eric

Network security in public computer is always a headche for many users. To help customers solve the problem, Facebook is publishing a one-time passwords which is safer to log on its site from public computers.

Customers of the system must firstly have a mobile phone number registered to their account. Then they need to send the word “opt” to 32665 and they will be texted back a temporary password to log in the net which will expire 20 minutes later. According to Jake Brill, product manager of the company, Facebook will open this feature gradually and all users could enjoy this feature in next few weeks.

However, is this new safe feature really safe?

At security firm Sophos, Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant said:“If someone else is able to gain access to your phone then that's an open door for mischief-makers to access your Facebook account.”

Meanwhile, hackers may be able to change mobile phone numbers on their victims' accounts to phone numbers they have access to, Cluley wrote. This will let them access to those accounts readily. “A temporary password may stop keylogging spyware giving cybercriminals a permanent backdoor into your account, but it doesn't stop malware from spying upon your activities online and seeing what's happening on your screen,” Cluley said. Nexus one, manufactured by HTC, the first and the only Android phone marked by Google. It packs a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB RAM, 32GB-capable microSD slot and 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display. The impressive hardware and software makes Google Nexus One outstanding for both work and multimedia usage. Nevertheless, like most smartphones available right now, it always and only supports MP4 video playback. Then how about multimedia collections (in AVI, WKV, WMV, RMVB, MOV, VOB, FLV, M2TS, MTS, M2T and etc) we already stored in computer or ripped from DVDs.

Naturally, we will think of converting those videos into Google Nexus One friendly formats. However, even if you have made your movies playable on your mobile, the screen resolution and aspect ratio were still not optimized for different displays. Therefore how to convert various videos to the perfect match for our Google Nexus One?

Posted in Mobile, News  by Eric

Get rid of the aging image of Symbian system, running the new open, Linux-based and intuitive Maemo OS, Nokia N900, a popular model in Nokia N-series, is designed to serve the needs of the multimedia hungry mobile phone user. The huge 3.5-inch touch-screen with 800 x 480-pixel resolution is capable of displaying up to 16 million colors. And it’s also equipped with impressive 32GB internal memory (expandable to 48GB via microSD cards). With the TFT resistive screen and large memory, N900 ensures perfect movie appreciation experience anytime anywhere.

Believe it or not, the best movies source is still from DVD disc. Since mobile phones only supports limited video formats while DVD is not included and DVD cannot be ripped that simply, here we are going to talk about how to convert DVD to Nokia N-series video with ease.

First things first, try to find some third party software for ripping movie source from DVDs. There are a lot similar products in the market, however not many of them can both rip DVD to video in desired format and dimension. To correctly and perfectly play movies in mobile, you need the movies’ resolution, bit rate, and other properties to be suitable for your cell phone, so we’d better choose one program supporting mobile device, especially Nokia N900. We like Sothink DVD Ripper best. Unlike some trial software, there is no quality loss or watermark in the output movie. Read the rest of this entry »
