Kingsoft announces android version of office app is free

Posted in News, Security  by Eric

Kingsoft today announced one of its major products, Kingsoft Office for Android is free. This App is the only Office application Kingsoft has ported to Android platform, which is designed to handle Microsoft and Kingsoft Office files on Android cell phone or tablet. The first version is released in August 2011 and has been sold at the price of $14.99 since then. Kingsoft said the free policy is made to meet the trend of Mobile Internet.

William, the Director of Kingsoft Office Mobility department said this morning that "Since the launch of Kingsoft Office for Android nearly 5 months ago, the numbers of our customers has grown sharply. However, the need to handle documents anywhere and at anytime for free is urgent. So, in order to meet the new development trend of Mobile Internet, we decide to make this app free."

William's speech has aroused a drastic debate within Kingsoft Office Company.

Some people hold that the last thing Kingsoft should do is to make this product free. This view is quite common because Kingsoft Office for Android has been receiving a lot of compliments from users since its release in August this year. With its user friendly interface and rich features setting it apart from its competitors, it has been elected to be the hot product in the Android Market of Google since September. Kingsoft Office for Android has been bringing steady profit to the company and the user base is also expanding.

While, more people hold different point of view. They believe that it is more important for Kingsoft Office to put the 'Kingsoft Office Brand' in the first place. At the same time, the pressure they are under is much more different than ever before. The need to have a complete, and full free office software for a rainy day for users is urgent. Although the free policy will result in some loss of profits, it is an effective way to accomplish its target.

As a result, after all these debates within the company, the board of Kingsoft made their final decision this morning and announced that Kingsoft Office for Android would be free from 14th Dec, this year. All the users who bought this product before, will get refund.

Google Chrome 16 Available Now

Posted in Internet, News  by Eric

The search giant has released Chrome 16.0.912.63 to the Stable Channel for Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome Frame. And as you may know if you’ve been following beta developments, this release contains one particularly interesting new feature in the ability to create multiple profiles for a single instance of Chrome.

If others use your copy of Chrome, you’ll probably already know just how important this can be. Because right now, sure, Chrome is great at syncing your bookmarks, extensions, history and so on across all your other devices. But if someone adds their own bookmarks or extensions then they’ll be synced as well, which probably isn’t what you want at all.

The new solution, then, is to go to Options/ Preferences, Personal Stuff, and click "Add new user". A new instance of Chrome will appear with a badge top-left that tells you which user it belongs to, and this can be edited to whatever you like. Repeat the process to add as many profiles as your PC has users, and if someone then wants to use your copy of Chrome, all they have to do is click the badge and choose their profile from the list. Any customizations they make will then be restricted to their profile only.

Microsoft Rolled out Windows Defender Offline Beta

Posted in Categories  by Eric

The software giant Microsoft has released the latest build of the Windows Defender Offline beta, a version of Windows' anti-spyware feature which is meant to be executed from a DVD or USB flash drive before Windows even starts up.

Windows Defender is included with Windows and has agents that can be run periodically, or at all times on a running system. Because it runs inside Windows, though, it is limited in what it can do.

This is what Windows Defender Offline is supposed to fix. It has been designed to scan your system for more elusive malware such as rootkits, or viruses that aren't constantly running processes and only act at startup or at unpredictable times. To do this, it needs to be installed on a piece of removable media so the user's Windows system can then be booted after Windows Defender Offline runs.

HTML5 will create new challenges for security pros next year

Posted in Internet, News  by Eric

The move to HTML5 will enable a whole host of new Web applications, but could also create new challenges for enterprise security professionals, according to security firm Sophos.

In its security predictions for 2012, Sophos identifies new Web and networking technologies — such as HTML5 — as one of the major security risks for the year ahead. While these technologies introduce some impressive new capabilities that are exciting for rich Web application development, they also introduce new attack vectors, the company explained.

HTML5 removes the need for most of the add-ons, because it is a more sophisticated language and comes with a full database that enables users to store gigabytes of information. So, for example, you can do full-frame animation, 3D virtual reality, or store applications inside the browser.

Kaspersky Lab is against SOPA

Posted in News, Security  by Eric

Kaspersky Lab, the security research company and prominent antivirus software vendor has announced its intent to withdraw from the Business Software Alliance because of the Alliance's support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

BSA and SIIA are the software industry's two biggest trade groups. Since both groups have strong anti-piracy stances, neither directly opposed the Stop Online Piracy Act. Both expressed interest in working with Congress to design the law.

After the bill was introduced last October, BSA President and CEO Robert Holleyman said, "As Congress continues its work on this legislation, it will be important to strike the right balance between two sets of considerations — enabling effective action against online pirates, while also ensuring the law does not impede technology innovation or the evolution of software and the Internet, which are critical engines for future economic growth. We look forward to working with Chairman Smith and his colleagues as they push this important legislation forward.”
