Firefox 10 Coming Tomorrow

Posted in Internet, News  by Eric

Firefox is moving on to double digits tomorrow with the release of Firefox 10.

The update will apply to the desktop formats as well as the mobile edition for Android. For those “people,” who never upgraded to Firefox 4, version 3.6 will be updated to version 3.6.9 which only adds security and stability fixes.

During a meeting today, Firefox announced a new hire for Mozilla’s marketing team. Pete Scanlon, who previously worked for Google’s campaigns for Chrome, is now working for Mozilla.

As with the past few full version updates to Firefox, there’s not much going on for consumers. The new capabilities are mostly for developers.

WinSnap 4.0.1 adds support for Aero shadows in screen captures, effects and more

Posted in News, Photograph & Graphics  by Eric

Capturing what’s on your desktop can be as simple as hitting the Print Screen key and pasting the contents of the clipboard into an image editing app. But you’ll notice that it is not possible to capture everything; the cursor cannot be included in grabs and many dialogs disappear when Print Screen is pressed. WinSnap is a powerful screen capture tool that includes a number of handy options, with the latest version bringing support for the capturing of native Aero shadows.

WinSnap is now able to capture the shadow that is added to windows and object by Windows, but in cases where this is not possible, post-capture shadowing can be added for you. Screen capturing has many purposes, but it is often used to highlight information. To make this easier, WinSnap includes a number of annotation tools that can be used to draw shapes and arrow on your grabs as well as adding text. To the same end, there are also a number of effects to choose from. If you want to highlight a particular area of a screen capture, you can opt to grey out the rest of the image, or blur it slightly.

Opera 11.61 launched with more than 50 fixes

Posted in Internet, News  by Eric

The latest addition to the stable release channel for Opera is Opera 11.61. The latest update includes more than fifty security and stability enhancements and is recommended for all users – you can either wait for the automatic updater to occur, or you can force a manual check and update from the Help menu. Two of the most important changes to the browser see a couple of on-going scripting problems being fixed, but there are also a large number of additional tweaks that address issues with various aspects of the program.

From a user interface point of view, there have been tweaks that fix problems such as incorrectly sized dialogs, incorrect icons and poor handling of fullscreen mode in Windows XP. Also fixed are a number of crash scenarios and better handling of third party skins. Users of previous versions of Opera have reported problems with a number of specific web sites including PayPal, NFL.com and others, and these crashes and freezes have now been fixed.

BitTorrent: Easily share files of any size

Posted in Internet, News  by Eric

When it comes to sharing files, there are a number of options available to you. If you want to share files with someone nearby, it may make sense to pop them on a USB drive and physically deliver them. For smaller files it is possible to make use of email, but things get trickier when larger files are involved. You could go as far as uploading files to your own web space or even setting up your own FTP server, but this is something that few people would want to go to these lengths. Share is a free tool that enables you to overcome these problems and share files of any size.

Coming from BitTorrent, it should come as no surprise to learn how Share works. It is essentially a personal torrent client that makes it possible to allow people of your choice to connect to your computer and access the files you have chosen to share; this is a great example of personal P2P. having created an account, files can be shared by using nothing more than drag and drop, and all you need to do is to select who you would like to share them with.

Sharing can be made into quite a social experience thanks to the ability to comment on files that are being shared. This is a great option if you are using the service to share files relating to a work project as it allows for a degree of collaboration. The fact that Share is available for both Mac and PC means that it is opened up to a larger audience and the ability to create groups for sharing means that sharing files with the same people time and time again is made as fast as possible.

Mozilla, Firefox join anti-SOPA strike

Posted in Internet, News  by Eric

Mozilla, the open-source organization responsible for Firefox, joined other major technology companies today to protest anti-piracy legislation by blackening the browser's home page.

From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, Firefox's default home page — essentially a search field for Google — will change from its usual white background with the Firefox logo to a blacked-out version displaying a modified graphic emblazoned with "Stop Censorship."

Meanwhile, the English language versions of Mozilla's sites — mozilla.com and mozilla.org — will redirect visitors to an "action page" asking for their support in stopping what it called "Internet blacklist legislation."

ISO ToolKit: Create, copy, convert, extract and mount disc images

Posted in News, Photograph & Graphics  by Eric

ISO images have been a popular means of distributing software for a very long time, so it was good to see Windows 7 finally introduce a tool to burn them to disc.

It’ll probably be Windows 10 before we get to see the operating system provide all the ISO handling features you’re likely to need, though, so if you regularly need to work with disc images then a quicker solution might be to download the ISO ToolKit.

The program supports five main functions. It can create an ISO image from a folder structure on your hard drive; copy a CD or DVD to an ISO image; convert images to and from the ISO, NRG and BIN/ CUE formats; extract the contents of an ISO, NRG or BIN/ CUE image; or mount up to two ISO, NRG or BIN/ CUE images as virtual drives, so that they can be accessed without burning them to disc.
