Kaspersky Lab teams up with VMware on virtualized security

Posted in News, Security  by Eric

Security solutions company Kaspersky Lab announced its first security product for virtual machines on Monday, appropriately named Kaspersky Security for Virtualization, which is meant to simplify the security management practices in a network of virtual machines –especially ones running on VMware virtual infrastructure– and integrate them with Kaspersky's endpoint security solutions.

Kaspersky Security for Virtualization is a centrally-managed virtual security appliance that integrates with VMware vShield Endpoint and Kaspersky Endpoint Security. With the anti-malware functions operating in a centralized virtual appliance, admins can intelligently deploy virtual and endpoint security alongside one another in a single admin console. This can eliminate the need for duplicated resources on each virtual machine and ultimately improve the overall performance.

Firefox for Windows 8 Metro under development by Mozilla

Posted in Internet, News  by Eric

Mozilla developers already have a lot on their plates. In addition to dealing with shorter release cycles for Firefox and Thunderbird, they’re now looking after tablet and smartphone versions of Firefox for Android, Firefox Home on iOS, and there’s a new long-term support version of Firefox, too. On top of that, they’re starting work on a Metro version of Firefox for Windows 8.

The Foundation plans on having the first test builds ready to go before summer, with alpha and beta releases slated for some time during the second half of 2012. Getting Firefox re-tooled using the WinRT programming model is important as it will allow Mozilla to submit the browser to the Windows Store, which will be front-and-center in Windows 8 — and will quickly become the destination for Windows users who are hunting for new software.

Avast! 7 released with custom install, cloud services, brand new interface

Posted in News, Security  by Eric

AVAST Software has released the first public betas of its 2012 security family, in the shape of avast! 7 Free, Pro and Internet Security.

One immediately obvious change comes in the revamped installer. If you’re tired of security tools taking over your entire system then you’ll appreciate the degree of control you get here. Install Internet Security, say, and you can choose precisely which core components you need (firewall, sandbox, spam filter, browsing protection, more), and which real-time shields, making it much easier to create a minimum install which should run alongside other security packages.

Waterfox 10 comes with all the power and features of Firefox with added 64-bit goodness

Posted in Internet, News  by Eric

When it comes to operating systems, 64-bit is becoming increasingly popular. The ability to access additional, and ever-more-important, memory is a bit draw, as is the added security and stability. But despite a general move to 64-bits for OSes, there is still relatively little 64-bit software that has been written to take advantage of them. This is also true in the browser arena, but it is something that is being addressed by Waterfox 10, a 64-bit version of Firefox.

While it is true that there are already 64-bit versions of Firefox available, this is only the case in the less stable Nightly and Aurora channels, and this is not something that everyone will be comfortable using. It is also worth noting the existence of Pale Moon, which is another Firefox-based web browser that also has a 64-bit version available. Waterfox is fully 64-bit and is based on the latest Firefox code – this means that the two browsers are all but identical, save for the color and labeling of the Firefox/Waterfox menu button.

Ad-Aware 10 Free released with new features

Posted in News, Security  by Eric

Lavasoft has today released Ad-Aware 10, the latest incarnation of its flagship antimalware package. The program will be available in three versions – Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+, Ad-Aware Personal Security ($12 per year) and Ad-Aware Pro Security ($36 per year) – but, unusually, it’s the free release this time around which sees the most significant change.

Many technologies which were previously reserved for the commercial editions only are now available in the free build, for instance. So real-time process protection will detect and block malware before it can launch; Registry protection looks out for potentially risky Registry changes, and real-time network protection blocks connections to blacklisted IP addresses. Ad-Aware 10 Free gains advanced rootkit protection, too, and the new (to this edition) Game Mode means the program can maintain all this without hassling you with extra alerts.

Dolphin Text Editor Menu adds powerful new text formatting options to almost any application

Posted in News, PDF & Files  by Eric

If you occasionally need to format a text document in advanced ways, perhaps adding line numbers or sorting its lines alphabetically, then your first thought might be to find and install a programmer’s editor. But these can be expensive, and complex, leaving you with a whole new editing interface to learn.

A better idea might be to install Dolphin Text Editor Menu. The program runs in the background, ready to work with virtually any application where you can enter text: Notepad, Wordpad, Word, Excel, Visual Studio, browsers and more. So you can use your preferred application as normal, then when you need some advanced option, just select the text you’d like to format, press Dolphin’s hotkey (Ctrl+Num Pad 0 by default) and the program’s menu will pop up.

Posted in News, Photograph & Graphics  by Eric

Donationcoder.com has announced the release of Screenshot Captor 3 for Windows PCs. Version 3.0 also includes other recently introduced features, such as full TWAIN and WIA scanner support, automatic upload to supported image hosting services and support for partial Windows 7 transparency effects.

Screenshot Captor 3, which is now also available as a separate portable version, adds a “super deluxe scrolling capture system”, which the author claims is the best on the market. This allows users to capture screens that are larger than the display, such as lengthy documents or websites.
