Firefox Extensions That Every User Should Install

Posted in Internet, Tips  by Martin

Mozilla Firefox comes with a good set of features compared to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. One of the biggest advantages of the Firefox browser is its extensibility with add-ons that are provided by the Firefox community. There are virtually thousands of add-ons to choose from and it might not always be easy to find the best add-ons among the massive offerings.

We thought it would be great to present a top list of Firefox extensions that every Firefox user should consider installing as they greatly enhance the web browsers capabilities. The following list will include add-ons that increase the browser’s security, privacy and functionality.

Adblock Plus
Adblock Plus blocks advertisements automatically when activated. It can be configured to show ads on some sites (whitelist). It generally does a very good job of blocking ads on webpages as its detection engine and scripts are improved all the time.

Users with slow Internet connections will benefit from this add-on in another way. Since all those ads are being blocked it usually takes less time to load a webpage.

NoScript
NoScript is a security add-on for Firefox. Most malware threats on the Internet are making use of scripts. This can be JavaScript, Flash content or any other scripting language that can be executed on websites. NoScript blocks all scripts by default and provides a whitelist to allow the execution of scripts on trusted websites. Read the rest of this entry »

Flickr Download

Posted in Internet, Tips  by Ghacks

The following article about Flickr Download is from our content partner Ghacks
If you want to download the full sized images at Flickr you soon notice that this involves clicking your way through quite a few pages before you can finally do so. Many Flickr images are protected by a transparent image called spaceball.gif which is used as rudimentary means of protection. It is therefor not easy and comfortable to download Flickr images from the image host.

Enter Flickr Original. A currently experimental Firefox add-on that takes lots of the burden away from the process. It basically provides the means to download Flickr images by right-clicking on a thumbnail. If you visit Flickr you notice that thumbnails are located on the first page that you visit if you perform a search or browse images.

All that needs to be done is to right-click a thumbnail on Flickr and select the Download Original Flickr Image option in the context menu. A download dialog will open with the choice to save the full sized image on the computer's hard drive. If multiple versions of the image are available then the largest image will be downloaded.

The second available option is to view the full sized image immediately on Flickr. The add-on is not working on all Flickr images. Images with disabled downloads and the flag "all rights reserved" cannot be download this way. A error message will appear telling the user that the image is not available for download.

Oh, and before you ask. That typo is there on purpose.

The Benefits of Using a Password Manager in Firefox

Posted in Internet, Reviews, Security  by Martin

Password managers add a new level of security to web browsers. The default way of handling passwords in web browsers is to let the user pick the username and password for a website. It is up to the user to pick a secure password so that his account cannot be brute-forced by hackers. We all know that many users like to pick passwords that they can remember easily.

Password Managers take the burden away by offering password generators that can generate a secure password in the form Bg6gX5!gff4 for the user. That's not all that they can do though and this article will review one of the popular Firefox password managers.

LastPass is an add-on for Firefox that provides password manager functionality after installation. What makes it special is the ability to import all passwords that have been saved in Firefox during setup. This means that all your old passwords will be stored in the password manager. Import is not only available for Firefox passwords but also for Internet Explorer, RoboForm or KeePass passwords.

This takes one of the burdens away from the user as all of his old passwords will still be working as usual after switching from the Firefox password manager to LastPass.

One of the main new features of the password manager is the password generator.

A link to the password generator will show up on top of the browser window on every registration page that you encounter. Another option is to access the secure password generator with a hotkey. It can be configured to use a specific password length and to include upper case, lower case, numbers and special chars. It is important that the choices are available as some websites restrict the characters of passwords. Read the rest of this entry »

Load Websites With Hotkeys In Firefox

Posted in Internet, Reviews  by Ghacks

The following article about Load Websites With Hotkeys In Firefox is from our content partner Ghacks.
Web browsers usually offer several ways on how to access websites quickly. Users can type in the url, assign keywords to urls or use their bookmarks to do that. Something that has not been on the radar yet is the ability to use hotkeys to launch websites. It is actually a very good question why no web browser is offering that feature yet. What's easier and faster than opening a website with a keyboard shortcut?

Site Launcher is a Firefox add-on that adds this functionality to the web browser. It does that in two ways. The first is by proving access [via CTRL SPACE] to an overlay menu which displays the configured websites that can be launched from there. Each website is assigned a single key on the keyboard which has to be pressed to launch it.

The second method [via ALT SHIFT KEY] is there for keyboard junkies who prefer to press one hotkey for the same effect. Adding websites to the Firefox extension is easy. It is possible to open the Site Launcher Manager right away and add websites manually or add websites directly when they are loaded in the active tab.

It is furthermore possible to change the default hotkeys if other combinations suite you better.

It does not really matter which way you choose as you can modify all parameters afterwards. You have to enter a key, a title and an url to add a new website to the application. Each key can only be added once to Site Launcher. There is also only room for lower case characters.

Each website that is opened this way will be opened in a new tab by default. This behavior can be changed in the extensive options. It is possible to change the appearance of the menu and other functionality in there.
