Mozilla, the open-source organization responsible for Firefox, joined other major technology companies today to protest anti-piracy legislation by blackening the browser's home page.
From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, Firefox's default home page — essentially a search field for Google — will change from its usual white background with the Firefox logo to a blacked-out version displaying a modified graphic emblazoned with "Stop Censorship."
Meanwhile, the English language versions of Mozilla's sites — mozilla.com and mozilla.org — will redirect visitors to an "action page" asking for their support in stopping what it called "Internet blacklist legislation."

If you’re not satisfied with the performance of your Firefox installation then a good first step is to make sure you’re fully up-to-date; Firefox 9, released just before Christmas, introduced some worthwhile improvements aimed at optimizing speed and cutting resource use.
If that’s not enough, though, you could always check out Pale Moon 9.0.1, released today. It’s a custom version of Firefox that has been further optimized for performance, and our initial benchmarks show some interesting results.
When we tested both browsers at Dromaeo, for instance, Pale Moon 9.0.1 took a major lead in the important DOM tests, with a 37 percent advantage on DOM Attributes, and a 33 percent lead on the DOM Queries benchmark. It also scored well on the math and logic tests. And while the story elsewhere was more mixed, Dromaeo still gave Pale Moon 9.0.1 an overall performance lead of 9 percent over Firefox (that’s up from a 5.8 percent advantage when we tested version 8.0).

Version 8.0 is the latest in a rapid series of releases from Mozilla that has seen development accelerated to rival the likes of Google Chrome.
Whereas version 7, release six weeks ago, concentrated on behind-the-scenes improvements, version 8 does feature some noticeable changes, including an Add-ons Compatibility Assistant plus an option for speeding up startup.
The new Add-Ons Compatibility Assistant only appears whenever the browser has been updated. It lists all add-ons, making it clear which ones have been disabled for compatibility reasons and inviting the user to review all third-party add-ons, giving them the opportunity to disable any before the browser starts.
