Now You Can Do More with Google Latitude

Posted in Internet, Tips  by Yuki

Since the Google Latitude released a few months ago, most users are satisfactory with this new Google location service. But it is not enough. Seen from users' feedback, they want to an additional function to share locations with any friends even they are not Latitude users. Today this demand has come true. Google launched Google Public Location Badge and Google Talk Location Status (Beta), realizing a more convenient and possible location share activity.

As the name shown, Google Public Location Badge is an application for your location display. Users can publish and modify the location on their blog or websites. You can either manually change your Latitude location or have your device's location detected automatically. GPS, Wi-Fi, or cell tower ID, these communication devices provide a more specific location display. But one tip needs to noticed, once you share your location publicly, you are not allowed to control who can or can't see it. Certainly, the location is up to users' choice, best available location and city-level locations are both available.

Google Talk Location Status (Beta) is actually regarded as an extension of Latitude. Once you try this application, your status on Google Latitude is automatically updated to Gmail and GTalk. This synchronous activity enables a time-to-time focus and release. The most recent location information could be shared by all your friends as soon as you move the city.

Gmail goes Offline - Not a Bug… A New Feature!

Posted in Chat & E-mail, Internet, Tips  by Lucas Artigas

When I've read this: "Gmail goes offline" I thought "Oh my God, there is going to be a lot of complaint". Nevertheless, further reading brought me a piece of news that in my opinion helps to make of Gmail the most versatile and fully featured webmail service ever. But, what am I saying… webmail?

According to Wikipedia: Webmail (or Web-based e-mail) is an e-mail service intended to be primarily accessed via a web browser, as opposed to through an e-mail client, such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla's Thunderbird, or Apple Inc.'s Mail.

So, to make a long story short, Google breaks the rules again with the release of Offline Gmail and adds new features to its already fully featured Web mail by joining its versatility with the stability of e-mail clients.

The flexibility you get when you have a laptop PC means that your Internet connection is not always as stable as you desire. A low signal quality, or the complete lack of it during a journey by bus, train or plane is something that makes us close our notebooks. But, let me put things a bit more real: you have written 10 paragraphs and when you are just about to send it your Internet connection fails, so, what do you do? If you are like me, you will most likely leave the thing as it is and not even want to rewrite the mail.

Well, those little problems we have had when our Internet connection fails just disappear with the new option brought by Offline Gmail as it allows us to continue working through its interface even when the computer is off-line. Read the rest of this entry »

New Android SDK Released
Along with the release of Android phone, a new version of Android SDK has been publicly released to developers. It has been a long time since the last version which was made available only to contest winners, which made some developers feel less than appreciated.

The new version of Android SDK is 0.9 beta, we call it m5-rc14. There are a couple of changes and highlights in m5-rc14.

New user interface - m5-rc14 replaces the previous placeholder with a new UI, but as before, work on it is still in-progress.

Layout animations - Developers can now create layout animations for applications using the capabilities introduced in the Android. View animation package. Check out the Layout Animation *.java files in the API Demos sample code for examples of how this works.

Geo-coding - android.location.geocoder enables developers to forward and reverse geo-code (i.e. translate an address into a coordinate and vice-versa), and also search for businesses.

New media codes - The Media Player class has added support for the OGG Vorbis, MIDI, XMF, iMelody, RTTL/RTX, and OTA audio file formats.

Updated Eclipse plug-in - A new version of ADT is available and provides improvements to the Android developer experience.

Try Android now!
Are you deeply attracted by Android? If you are interested in trying out Android before buying your own, do the following easy steps and you can experience Android on your PC.

1. Download Android SDK here. Windows Version Mac Version Linux Version
2. Unzip files into a directory on your computer.
3. Open the “Tools” directory and double-click on the “emulator.exe” to start the simulator.

With simulator, you can play with Android as your mind. For more powerful features, you can find and install applications from some sort of application directory. Have a good Android trip!
