Firefox for Windows 8 Metro under development by Mozilla

Posted in Internet, News  by Eric

Mozilla developers already have a lot on their plates. In addition to dealing with shorter release cycles for Firefox and Thunderbird, they’re now looking after tablet and smartphone versions of Firefox for Android, Firefox Home on iOS, and there’s a new long-term support version of Firefox, too. On top of that, they’re starting work on a Metro version of Firefox for Windows 8.

The Foundation plans on having the first test builds ready to go before summer, with alpha and beta releases slated for some time during the second half of 2012. Getting Firefox re-tooled using the WinRT programming model is important as it will allow Mozilla to submit the browser to the Windows Store, which will be front-and-center in Windows 8 — and will quickly become the destination for Windows users who are hunting for new software.

Waterfox 10 comes with all the power and features of Firefox with added 64-bit goodness

Posted in Internet, News  by Eric

When it comes to operating systems, 64-bit is becoming increasingly popular. The ability to access additional, and ever-more-important, memory is a bit draw, as is the added security and stability. But despite a general move to 64-bits for OSes, there is still relatively little 64-bit software that has been written to take advantage of them. This is also true in the browser arena, but it is something that is being addressed by Waterfox 10, a 64-bit version of Firefox.

While it is true that there are already 64-bit versions of Firefox available, this is only the case in the less stable Nightly and Aurora channels, and this is not something that everyone will be comfortable using. It is also worth noting the existence of Pale Moon, which is another Firefox-based web browser that also has a 64-bit version available. Waterfox is fully 64-bit and is based on the latest Firefox code – this means that the two browsers are all but identical, save for the color and labeling of the Firefox/Waterfox menu button.

Posted in News, Security  by Eric

Since 2004, Mozilla has been offering a bounty of $500 for any security bug information, and now it upped the amount of the bounty to $3,000, undoubtedly attractive for bug finders.

As Lucas Adamski, Director of Security Engineering said in his blog, "While the original mission of protecting users by supporting security research has not changed, the security environment has changed tremendously. In recognition of these changes we are updating our security bounty program to better support constructive security research."

Increase of the bounty payment is not the only thing refreshed in the security bug bounty program, the scope covered by the program has also been expanded. Besides Firefox and Thunderbird, which are already included in the program, Firefox Mobile and any Mozilla services the products rely upon are added into it.

It is also noted in the official reward guidelines that only those significant critical and significant high severity security bugs that meet the following criteria can be awarded. Read the rest of this entry »
